John Joseph Smith is the first son of Bernard Smith & Henrietta Maria Gresswell. He was born May 1846 in Perth, W.A., He married Mary Duffy, married 11 Nov 1869 in St. Mary's R.C. Cathedral, Perth, W.A., Mary was born 3 Mar 1848 in Portadown, Co. Armagh, Ireland.

John died 15 Mar 1892 in (aged 46 years), "Beaufort Arms" Hotel, Perth, W.A., buried in Karrakatta Cemetery, R.C. AA 46A, Perth, W.A. Mary died 23 Mar 1938 (aged 90 years) in Mt. Lawley, W.A., and buried in Karrakatta Cemetery, R.C. AA 46A, Perth, W.A.

A grandson of John Joseph Smith was Eric Harold HAWTIN

Eric Harold HAWTIN, prior to WW1 was a member of the 30th Signal Company, Australian Engineers, which was in essence a "Militia" Unit and when war began he joined the AIF and the 10th Lt Horse and went overseas where he was eventually killed on 10 Dec 1916 in Fileurs, France.
 
In the mess of 106 Squadron, Royal Australian Corps of Signals at Karrakatta is an Honour Board listing the men from the 30th Signal Company who went to WW1, including HAWTIN.
 
A book is being produced and it is planned to "unveil" it on Anzac day 2012 at the service at Karrakatta Barracks. The Signals Association is trying to find any relatives of Eric to invite them to participate as guests on Anzac Day.
